Parent Guide: Building Habits with "Star Rewards"

Welcome to "Anxin Learn". We have designed a unique Star Points & Wish System.

This is not just a tool to "coax kids to watch videos", but an educational tool based on Behavioral Psychology (Token Economy). If used correctly, it will be a powerful assistant for cultivating your child's focus, delayed gratification, and financial quotient.

Core System Overview: How it Works

To give you a macro view, we designed the learning process as a "Behavior-Feedback" Loop.

This loop consists of three key steps:

1. Input: Learning Behavior

  • Child performs effective learning (focused video watching) in the App.
  • System automatically monitors focus duration.

2. Process: Algorithm Feedback

  • Rule: Every accumulated 6 minutes of effective time.
  • Output: System automatically issues 1 Star (Token).

3. Output: Two-way Value After stars enter the child's "account", they generate educational value through two paths:

  • Path A: Spiritual Reward (Level Up)
    • Accumulate stars -> Level Up -> Get Honor Badges -> Cultivate Perseverance & Achievement.
  • Path B: Material Reward (Wish Redemption)
    • Spend stars -> Redeem Wish -> Parent Pricing & Fulfillment -> Get Real Reward -> Cultivate Delayed Gratification.

Part 1: Why Design This System? (Scientific Basis)

Many parents worry: "Will rewarding kids with points make learning utilitarian?"

Actually, for young children, the prefrontal cortex is not yet fully developed, making it hard to understand abstract concepts like "learning for the future".

The Star System solves three core problems:

  1. Visualizing Abstract "Progress" A child's effort is invisible, but "Stars" are visible. According to Positive Reinforcement theory, when a behavior (focused learning) is immediately followed by positive feedback (getting stars), the probability of that behavior occurring again increases significantly.

  2. Training "6-Minute Focus" Q: Why give a star only every 6 minutes?

A: Fragmented browsing is harmful. We require children to "effectively watch" for a full 6 minutes (usually the length of a complete knowledge point) to get a reward. This actually trains the sustained attention ability to sit still and listen.

  3. Cultivating "Delayed Gratification" & "Contract Spirit" Our Wish System is not a unilateral charity from parents, but based on a "Proposal-Pricing-Fulfillment" contract process. This teaches children that everything they want requires effort to earn.

Part 2: Game Rules & Mechanics (Must Read)

To help you explain to your child, we have established transparent rules:

1. How to Get Stars?

  • Focus Threshold: Every accumulated 6 minutes watching = 1 Star.
  • Rollover: Time less than 6 minutes is recorded and kept (Pending), telling the child: "Your 3 minutes weren't wasted, watch another 3 minutes next time to get a star." This encourages children not to give up easily.
  • No Cap: Currently, we have no daily cap, encouraging children to earn more within reasonable screen time.

2. Level Calculation (Transparent Data)

Level depends on total stars earned. To train perseverance, we use Non-linear Difficulty Design, meaning higher levels require more stars.

Level Table:

LevelTotal StarsEquivalent TimeStage
Lv. 12 Stars12 MinsStart: Quick achievement
Lv. 26 Stars36 MinsTry: Initial habit
Lv. 314 Stars1.4 HoursPersist: Needs patience
Lv. 538 Stars3.8 HoursAdvanced: Stable habit
Lv. 10150 Stars15 HoursGrit: Milestone achievement

Part 3: Wish Wall - Core of Parent-Child Interaction

This is the most educational feature in the App. Unlike traditional "parent gives, child takes", we designed a "Proposal System".

1. Process: From Wanting to Getting

  • Step 1: Child Proposal
    • In the Wish Wall area of the profile, the child can tap the "Edit" icon to input what they want (e.g., "Want a box of markers").
    • Education Point: Encourage the child to clearly express their needs.
  • Step 2: Parent Pricing
    • Seeing the wish on the parent side (or verbally agreed), you set a "Star Price" based on the reward size.
    • Education Point: This is a great chance for Value Education. Why is "30 mins TV" worth 5 stars, but "Theme Park" worth 100? Through pricing, children intuitively understand difficulty and value.
  • Step 3: Ease Accumulation (Working)
    • The wish hangs on the wall with a progress bar. This becomes the motivation for learning.
  • Step 4: Fulfillment
    • When stars are enough, the child clicks redeem. System deducts stars, and you fulfill the reward in reality.

2. How to "Price" Wishes? (Best Practices)

We suggest a Tiered Menu:

TierPrice SuggestionReward Examples (Focus on Experience)Scenario
Instant3 - 5 Stars (~30 mins study)• Play 10 mins more after dinner • Extra bedtime story • Pick tomorrow's breakfastDaily: Makes stars feel useful immediately.
Short-term20 - 30 Stars (~1 week)• Park boating on weekend • Baking together • Pick a new picture bookWeekly Plan: Learn to plan effort by "week".
Milestone100+ Stars (~1 month)• Long-awaited Lego set • Zoo/Theme Park trip • Family Pizza PartyDelayed Gratification: Saving and waiting for big goals.

Part 4: Three Principles of Execution

The App is just a "ledger", you are the governor. For the system to work, please follow:

  1. Contract Spirit (Most Important)

    • Once a rule is set (e.g., 10 stars for ice cream), strictly enforce it.
    • Note: Never advance stars (no credit), and never renege when stars are enough. This builds respect for rules.
  2. Ritual Sense

    • When redeeming, don't just coldly give the item. Give a hug and say: "This is what you earned from your persistence last week, you deserve it!"
    • Let the child feel pride in earning rewards, which is more important than the prize itself.
  3. Gentle but Firm

    • If you see the child zoning out just to farm stars, gently pause: "You look tired and efficient is low. Let's rest and earn stars when you have energy."
    • Don't blame, but hold the line on "effective learning".

FAQ

Q: Are stars kept if we change phone/iPad?

A: Note that currently data is stored locally on the device. This means stars are savings on this specific "Learning Buddy (Device)". If you change devices or uninstall, data will be cleared.

  • Education Opportunity: Teach the child to cherish their labor results and care for their learning device like a piggy bank.
